  2. BIM Tree - Revit family prototype sucessfully tested

    About 1o months after presenting the idea of dynamic (growing) trees at the Landscape Architecture Construction International Conference in Beijing we successfully tested the prototype for a Revit family. The Prototyp was a dataset with generic trees for early design stages and about 30 common used trees with growing and form parameters as well as tree nursery stock information. Landscape architecture bachelor students in Rapperswil, Switzerland tested the tree in 3D modeling and BIM courses.

  3. Smart BIM Trees - From Design Drawing to Construction Site

    I presented this topic at the Landscape Architecture Construction International Conference - Design and Construction with Information (School of Architecture, Tsinghua University) December 2019. Trees (and other plants) are one of the most important domain-specific objects in landscape design. They are poorly supported in the current BIM environment as the mostly provided by RPC (Rich Photorealistic Content) objects. RPC content focuses on rendering but doesn't provide support for clash detection (no envelope, no roots) or provide data for other disciplines (e.a. weight for structure engineering, water consumption for irrigation). They also don't reflect the dynamic character of plants (growth).

  4. Early adaptions of Design to Fabrication in landscape design

    Detailing the design in drawings was not an option for complex forms of molds for casting in epoxy glued sand for the "Animal Sent Garden" of the central exhibition areas of the Federal Garden Exhibiton 2005, commonly referred to as BUGA. Therefor we transferred the design directly to a 5-axis wood milling machine.

  5. Early adaptions of Prefabrication in landscape design

    Prefabrication was the answer to a challenging task at the Federal Garden Exhibition 2005 (commonly referred to as BUGA) in Munich for a temporary seasonal planting display area. "The Leaf Garden" consisted of planting beds with paths following the complex pattern of leaf nerves. As the structure was temporary the client requested a low-cost solution without compromising the design. We chose untreated steel and wood as the material for the edges of the planting beds for easy recycling and cost considerations. This reduced the available construction time to only 10 days after the end of the winter to get ready for the first planting in April.
